Postgraduate Students Homepage
Background
In 2001, the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care became an independent Postgraduate Division in the Faculty of Medicine. Since that date we have worked towards establishing an ongoing research postgraduate program. The Department has for many years been strong in the area of clinical research. By promoting a postgraduate research program we hope to extend our research excellence to fundamental laboratory research.
Personnel
The Division has a head who is appointed on a yearly basis. The current Head of Division is Prof. WU Ka Kei William
Research projects
These have depended mainly on the interests and availability of supervisors. Potential projects can be broadly classified into:
- Clinical and epidemiological research relating to anaesthesia, pain management or intensive care,
- Laboratory based research relating to the assay of anaesthetic drugs and,
- Projects involving animal research (dependent on grants).
Course details
Students are expected to do full-time research under the supervision of a staff member. They may also be asked to provide occasional services to the department. The Faculty arranges a number of compulsory courses in laboratory methods and biostatistics that the student is expected to attend and pass. Students are expected to present their work at regular departmental seminars. They are also encouraged to present their work at international research meetings and publish papers in peer-reviewed journals.
Current policy regarding admissions
A studentship is provided. Students are enrolled for 2 (MPhil) or 4 (PhD) years. Conversion from MPhil to PhD is possible. Some candidates with a master’s degree can enter year 2 of the PhD program.
