School CPR/AED Press Release

The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at CU Medicine conducted a non-inferiority randomized controlled trial on over 300 secondary school students at four schools. The results showed that trained school teachers, who attended the American Heart Association basic life support provider course, were not different or at least not worse than healthcare professionals at teaching secondary students on how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) safely. The results suggest that the 2-hour compression-only CPR and AED course is feasible, effective and flexible to include in the busy school curriculum; this is one way to address the local low survival rates in patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrests.
