Obstetrics and Maternal-Fetal Fellowship

Overview
The Prince of Wales Hospital is affiliated with The Chinese University of Hong Kong. As a large teaching hospital and modern tertiary referral center, it is one of the busiest maternity units in Hong Kong. Averaging between 4000-5000 deliveries per year, we manage a high volume of Caesarean sections, epidurals and other obstetric emergencies. We receive complex maternity cases for multi- disciplinary management, which can include high-risk pregnancies requiring support from our cardiothoracic specialists. The Obstetric unit comprises two labour ward theatres, Maternal Special Care beds for high-risk mothers requiring enhanced monitoring, and a well-regarded Maternal Fetal Medicine Unit. In addition to providing core anaesthesia services which includes a 24-hour epidural service, we support our obstetricians with their fetoscopic and EXIT procedures.

Fellowship opportunities
During the clinical fellowship there will be opportunities for extensive training and learning under supervision. Elective lists occur every weekday, and the on-duty obstetric anaesthesia team will be expected to manage this in parallel to any emergency work. There is also the opportunity to attend the obstetric anaesthetic clinic and handle department consultations for high-risk cases. Fellows will also be expected to provide teaching for anaesthesia residents and the midwifery team, and deliver presentations/journal reviews for continuous development purposes, as well as embark on a quality improvement/audit project under supervision.

What to expect
Fellows will be rostered to the obstetric unit but should expect to provide anaesthesia for some general elective lists as well. Fellows will be expected to provide 2-3 onsite-calls each month to help with service demands. Since we have a dedicated obstetric anaesthetist to cover services out-of-hours, a proportion of these onsite calls will be obstetric on-calls with distant supervision. Local medical and nursing teams are fluent in English and are able to help with translation and interpretation if needed. All fellows are allocated mentors throughout the program.
