Cardiothoracic and Interventional Cardiology Fellowship

Overview
The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at Prince of Wales Hospital provides anaesthesia services for over 500 adult cardiac surgical cases per year, with a full range of procedures including elective and emergency surgery, as well as minimally invasive cardiac interventions. Moreover, we provide anaesthesia for state-of-the-art elective and emergency thoracic surgeries. At our centre, we provide high quality services for complex and high-risk cases – as evidenced by the excellent clinical outcomes of patients. Moreover, extensive research is conducted by the department on prehabilitation and post-operative outcomes in the specialty.

List of procedures include (excluding transplant):

  • Cardiac surgery
    • Coronary artery surgery

Fellowship opportunities
In the 12 month fellowship, fellows will have exposure to the above procedures and gain experiences in managing them under supervision. As transesophageal echocardiography is an integral part of cardiac surgery, the fellow will be guided to acquire proficiency in TEE by National Board of Echocardiography (NBE) accredited perioperative echo cardiac anaesthetists, through a structured training program. Moreover, regional techniques are routinely employed for perioperative pain management for cardiothoracic operations, and fellows will receive hands on practice on performing ultrasound guided nerve blocks for various procedures.

The fellow will be expected to also provide teaching for anaesthesia residents, and deliver presentations/journal review for continuous development purposes, as well as embark on a quality improvement/audit or research project over the year under supervision.

What to expect
Fellows join a team of 5 Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthetists, and will occasionally be rostered to non-cardiac lists to facilitate service provision. Fellows are expected to provide a number of general calls per month, with the rest of the calls attaching a cardiac anaesthetist on call. Local medical and nursing staff are fluent in English and are able to help with translation and interpretation if needed. All Fellows are allocated mentors throughout the program.
