Epidemiology

  • zoonosis
    • horses (intermediate hosts)
    • fruit bats (reservoir)
  • 3 human cases in Queensland, Australia in 1990s

Clinical features

  • flu-like illness
  • pneumonitis
  • renal failure
  • shock
  • aseptic meningitis (seroconversion illness)
  • delayed (~1 year) neurological presentation with encephalitis (~1 year)
