Table 7. Causes of inaccuracy in thermodilution cardiac output measurements

- Thermistor impinged on vessel wall insulating it from "cool" injectate. Unacceptable cardiac output curves or inadequate PA pressure tracings suggest that this may be happening.
- Abnormal respiratory pattern
- Intracardiac shunts
- Tricuspid regurgitation
- Cardiac arrhythmias which cause beat-to-beat variation in stroke volume.

- Injectate warmer than temperature recorded by computer eg temperature recorded is temperature of ice bath but fluid has not had time to cool to that temperature; fluid warmed in syringe by higher temperature of syringe or operator's hand.
- Fluid being infused through side-arm of percutaneous sheath
- Proximal injectate port lies within sheath
