Table 2. Complications associated with invasive arterial pressure monitoring.

- Ischaemia distal to cannula. Frequently first sign is erythema of the skin above the catheter. Dressings should be removed at least daily to allow adequate inspection for ischaemic skin changes. Major sequelae associated with low cardiac output, shock, sepsis, prolonged cannulation, vasculitis and hyperlipidaemia

- Exsanguination. Flows through 18G cannula sufficient to cause blood loss of 500 ml/min.

- Spurious result. eg as a result of transducer falling to the floor.

- Infection. More commonly via infected stopcocks than as a result of migration along tract of the cannula.

- Intra-arterial injection of drugs
